Mythic Creatures

Mythic Creatures

Giants Dragons and Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures produced by the American Museum of Natural History was a 2,000 sq. ft. exhibition designed to travel domestically for the next decade. Visitors encountered stories of mythical creatures from cultures around the world and discovered how these myths came to be.

I served as lead Exhibition Designer on this project at the American Museum of Natural History.

Sculpted models bring many of these mythical creatures to life, while digital and physical interactives explain how myths could have developed by misinterpreting fossils or rare animals.

Historic objects show how mythical creatures have become central to many cultures. Creatures are featured in roof tiles, masks, letter seals, candlesticks, and jewelry representing deeply held cultural beliefs and stories.

Accessibility, playfulness and accurate cultural representation were all crucial to the planning and design of this exhibition. From an operations perspective, the height requirements, ease of installation, efficient crating and durability were all equally as important to consider ensuring the show can be enjoyed by many future audiences.
